There are always some tip everytime you start and load the game. That includs even workbenches reducing or prevents mobs from spawning. Never seen standing torches in those tips and neither have I noticed something like that.
I was hoping myself early in my game that lit standing torches would scare away greydwarfs but that only gave them a reason to smashed them. :)
