I use wooden spikes to keep everything away and off my walls, and everything else. I use my walls as a place to shoot arrows from. Wood spikes will stagger trolls that hit them. Just make sure you repair the spikes often and during the battle. They are only good for a couple hits before being destroyed, and gone.
