I think the level 4 troll armour requires a level 5 workbench (hence, the iron and obsidian). Then a person can upgrade the troll armor to level 4 with troll hides/bone.

Exactly. Level 4 bronze only requires iron, but, once you get iron, why would you upgrade either unless you don't plan on making iron armor (did someone say Fenris armor :-)?
