PVP settings do have something to do with this, but aren't necessary. For example: I'm usually too lazy to go grab our butcher knife (on top of the fact that I never bothered to learn where we kept it) when dealing with the boars on our farm, so I just turn on PVP when I'm doing that chore then turn it back off when done.

Not exactly, the method in game is to use the butcher knife.
If a person turns on pvp it is because they are now flagged to be destroyed because it is an asset of a player.

The 2 things are technically different, which is the best kind. (Futurama reference) ;)
