No you do not. I have run a server between the RTM build and the public-test versions on multiple occasions utilising the same game save file with no issues. Backups were performed but not required to be restored from.

If the OP has made changes on the map, ie building, more exploring, etc then rolling back to the pre public-test build save file will lose any changes they made on that save file.
