My guess is that something is wrong with the Valheim files on your machine or you need to watch your bedtime. I say this because:

1) Sleeping in any bed always gives me the rested buff.

2) 20 seconds refers to real time and represents a much larger chunk of Valheim time. The passage of Valheim time is accelerated when a viking sleeps.

3) A smelter full of ore will process all of it if one has loaded enough coal while a viking sleeps in Valheim. If a viking loads a smelter with ore and coal and stands in a sheltered area with a fire watching the smelter, the viking will get the rested buff before the smelter spits out more than one or two ingots.

4) A viking will always arise at the crack of dawn whether he or she goes to bed in the late afternoon, evening, or midnight. Perhaps you went to sleep at the Valheim equivalent of 0400, leaving too little Valheim time before the crack of dawn to get the rested bonus.

Please note, my guess is not a WAG (Wild Ass Guess). I made arguments based on the game's mechanics as I have observed them. This makes my guess a SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess).

Sleeping in the bed doesn't give the rested buff, but it might LOOK that way to you because you keep sleeping in the bed, BUT, you can't sleep in the bed unless, what?.... That's right... Unless there is a fire nearby... The FIRE is giving the rested buff (not the bed or sleep) and the more comfort items placed within range, the longer the duration the buff will last.

Out in the field, you can get rested buff by simply making fire and sitting by it... no bed is even required, but the bed does make the buff a tiny bit longer. (adds +1 comfort for regular bed within range)
