Solo should not be issues.

Some mods may do unwanted things if you play on servers with other people, be careful of that. For example if you have a player mod for increased carry slots and go on a server without that, you could lose all items in the extra spots.

I think the only time you will lose the contents of those slots is if you disable the mod giving the extra slots without first clearing them out.

What your carrying is tracked by the local game client, what you put in chests or drop on the ground is tracked by the server.

Being able to use a mod with a remote server really depends on if the mod does something to that impaccts how the player actually interacts with the environment. A super weapon wouldn't work since it directly interacts with the other players and mobs but a snap grid for planting would because the client only sends the server the xyz location of a turnip seed being planted, not what the player is seeing when they click a spot.

I currently use mods that allow me to put tin ore in a blast furnace, add a snap grid for planting, a server quick connect and an increased map reveal while exploring. These are all client side changes that don't alter the actual game mechanics in anyway and I've been able to use them on a non modded shared server without issue.

Some of the restrictions like what goes into a blast furnace and not being able to portal metals seem to be all client side. i made limited use of a mod on my friends server to move metals vie the portals

Things the player is actually carrying is tracked by the client only, the server doesn't keep track of a players inventory itself. Thats why you can carry items between worlds,.
