The reason for the nerf is people shooting rocks to get the bow skill up to 100 and then complaining it is too over powered. Sadly if you play the game normally you never would get the skill that high for many many IRL hours of gameplay when you end up really deserving that power due to dedication.

It has zero to do with how much money they made.

if that was the case it would be very easy to change it to not count collisions with rocks or trees as a way to increase the skill xp.
