wolves... LOTS of wolves. More specifically, I did a moat around my housing/crafting areas. I then level it so that the wall is un-scaleable. I then place palisades on top of that, too. Later, I craft benches all over the place in holes and then cover them with stones so that the land looks flat (and creatures cannot spawn inside crafting table circles). Voila... un-disturbed housing area.
