it's not that grindy as you decribed. (and more you progress into the game faster you get basic resources like wood and stone).
personally i think the only tedious part is getting metal during iron-silver age. cuz you can't use portals for easy transportation back to base. and it's heavy enough to require multiple runs (even with a use of transportation).
