Your wooden hammer in your hotkey bar is for building. If you press that numerical key, you're in building mode.

So for example if your wooden hammer(mallet) is in hotkey bar as #4, then if you press 4 on your keyboard, you'll be in building mode.

If your axe or sword or mace are in a different hotkey, select those in order to fight.
