My understanding is that the chance for a type to attack gets weighted by the number of those enemies you have killed.

But then if you keep getting attacked by trolls you will end up killing a lot of trolls. IDK personally though since I am normally out exploring and not sitting around a base much. So I don't get many attack events. Current play-through I have had two in over 100 game days.
