I would also add a suggestion:
7. Have one unconnected portal at the base all the time.
Use it as decoration (as a door like in hobbit house or as a frame for boss trophy). Name it "backup" and try to not use it at all. Don't mistake this backup portal with temporary exploring portal. This one should not be used at any time if possible. The reason for having a backup portal is that by playing with portal tags sooner or later you will get stranded somewhere far away from home as a result of mistake described by OP (no 4.). If you don't have unconnected portal back at home, your only way home could be to die. Having backup portal will allow you to get back home easily and fix a mistake you made earlier.
