I didn't die during the raid. I died elsewhere (and the teleporter I put down on a tiny island was promptly destroyed when 3 enemies spawned on it). It was when I respawned that a raid began immediately.

I guess I am confused ... when did you die another three times then? By your OP I assumed it was where you ended up when you died the first time and the event started?
