I don't think you have to worry about the beam width. As long as you lower the sail before you go in (recommended in any case), I'm pretty sure it will turn sideways if it hits something.

I might be able to hop into one of those worlds to test it. I'm just entering swamp in my current playthrough, and the longship will be one of the first things I build.
