It sounds like you are really new to the game, or not that skilled with this style of combat. So you will have to work on your own skills as well as part of it. Prior to getting bronze and a decent buckler shield i recommend kiting trolls using fire arrow and kill them at way.

Learn to roll dodge to avoid being hit, and use the axe on trolls, it is probably stronger than the basic club until you get upgraded weapons

The surtling cores are little red cubes and they are generally in almost every single tomb. Maybe 1 in 10 does not have any, most have 3-8 of them. Some if you are crazy lucky have 15+ and some will only have 1. It is luck but it is just a process of finding them and exploring them.

The tombs should be easy with club, leather armor and wooden buckler. you can stagger the skellies with a parry (well timed block) and then you can 2 shot the skelly. As soon as you get those cores to get a smelter going do it, and upgrade to bronze.
