I have never heard of someone so inefficient at hunting. Leather armor is irrelevent really quickly its not worth upgrading. The games not a scam because you havnt grasped it properly in your personal experience. And it sounds like you played it on release, didnt get it then, and so you waited a year to try it again? You rant as if theres some unspeakable flaw in the games design but its pretty much just a you problem mate...
