My advice, for what it's worth.

Find a place near a dwergr base and set up camp. They'll probably get themselves killed, leaving you with a good flat area to build on. Pay attention and you'll find the mists clear sometimes, that's a great time to explore. Build a Galdr table and look at the cape there. Also, chickens.
