Did you not know there's an option to turn that off in Minecraft?

I don't care for the grave mechanic because it is a dated, unfun mechanic. It's punishment enough to have to get back to where you were, especially if you don't have a portal in the area. Having to do so without any of your stuff is just unnecessary tedium that adds nothing of value to the game. This really should be a gameplay option just like it is in Minecraft.
