This game is much more better designed than it first looks or how the idiots say it is.
It doesn't let you sit on your ass and just win. You have to work through the different biomes, and each of them plays differently.
Plains is a slaughter field at first. Forcing you to build a farm there makes you prepare a lot, and also makes you use the "no enemies spawn on a base" mechanic to keep is safe.

In our second playthrough I found a relatively small batch of plains separated from the rest of it by a deep river. I walled it off entirely, and built like 50 overlapping worbenches to stop spawns. In the end it became a pretty good farm, with 800+ flax harvested in one go.
