    bullets do too, and you can draw a line of their partial trajectory to give a pretty tight cone for the origin, but that takes a lot of equipment. 
The answer is that it cheats and gives the mobs the location. It should give them a probability cone to investigate that tightens per hit, and dumb animals should not get this, only intelligent enemy. Animals should instead flee in a random direction.
game balance. Sneak attack does a lot of damage at range for no risk, and usually you can get 2-3 more hits before it can close on your location. If its still alive, its severely weakened, and that works fine here, even though it cheats a bit and is not entirely realistic.
