Hold shift and you can place them anywhere, as long as they are contacting something.

Dark Souls is harder but less punishing. If you die in Dark souls, at most you'll face a few minutes downtime as you run back to the boss again. In Valheim that downtime can extend from a few minutes ..

Steam Cloud is pretty terrible. Valve doesn't do much to improve it because 90% of the time people get mad at the individual games despite it being a problem with Valve's system.I had that crap happen..
