That is not a proper moat... its a stream you have dug that exits into the sea. Therefore the troll can get through still, along with anything else really. Troll head is above land, so it is not deep ..

early raids don't really have the gumption to get through a simple wooden stake wall, so if you want to ignore them, you can just keep planting turnips in the safety of your fenced backyard

chop the trees with a shield in the offhand. When it falls, block the log and push it where you want it. Just don't stand right under it.

jump on the tree as it fall will make it fall that way :D

Yes. As soon as the tree is chopped it becomes a model of a log that falls and that you can push around. It can also crush you, so use wisely.

Yeah I figured as much cause they'd have to bore through more wall pieces to make a big enough hole. But that also consumes tons more stone overall when using just 1x1 blocks. =/

It seems incredibly contrary, but using the 1x1 stones gives you the most durability. The stone wall pieces all have 1,500 hp regardless of size.
