Travel time is a huge issue in this game even with portals you need one at your base that's not one that's already connected. ,then need to set up one where you are.

My impression is they wander around their spawn point in a circle of a certain maximum radius. If you don't see it, be careful as it's in the vicinity and can surprise you.

The terrain isn't voxel generated, it's height-mapped. If it were voxels then terraforming would be even laggier :/Height mapping is basically the technology behind Doom. Not Doom 2016; Doom 1994
