Don't forget you're actually dead so "food" isn't for sustenance but for a sort of magical buff.

Yeah, the terrain deformation performance hit has been solved for quite a while.Turn Particle lights to Low, that's the biggest performance impact, especially in the mountains.

Actually, the fantastic additions of tar pits and lox riding/breeding shows the developers are still investing effort into the Planes, so would not be surprised if the plains get caves in the future.
