I always thought it was just to simulate normal wear and tear.

If it is constant damage, it is from lag. Basically since the player is driving the boat, it can desync from the server. And when the position gets corrected, the engine thinks the boat hit the waves ..

Yes, the devs have specifically said that you can't plant berry bushes because they want you to have to go back into those biomes. and the fewer indestructible items in world gen the better imo
