The difference in blocking with a parry isn't that much better, if you miss however, the buckler is way worse. Shield is the better option.

One thing about the swamp, is that it's raining almost all the time and the fires end up going out, so make sure the fire is covered to actually be burning.

Better and safer to put the shack on top of crypt though I would opt for a portal so you can get a long rest bonus and all the other things a real base offer you.
