Signs work perfectly, just leave room for them. After you play for a while (if you organize your loot) you'll have memorized which chest holds what items.

Easy to replace, but not sure if Ive heard of gravestones being destroyed. Its possible someone else just picked up all his stuff

He was on my server and as we were fighting a troll, he died and somehow the troll destroyed his tombstone and he lost all of his stuff (leather stuff, skeleton shield, flint blade, basic tools etc).

What's wrong with using signs?

Instead of exclusively using arrows, use the bonemass skill as well. Get on in there and melee their health down. It's much faster.

If you're confident, she is quite killable in melee with using the bow only til she lands.
