Yes, you can only dig so deep. Canals are possible, but only if the starting terrain between the two ends stays relatively close to sea level.

Visit the mountains at night, listen for howls. If one doesn't appear, just continue doing it till you find one. Just found mine a few days ago.

Valheim Plus has a function that prevents tamed animals from taking any damage. Valheim Plus is like 20 mods in 1. It is always updated within 2-5 days of any patch or update as a rule.

I haven't seen such a mod, although I haven't looked recently, but for any animal, and for clumsy vikings, it's good to keep your fireplaces and campfires protected behind railings.
