You can build in them sure. Once you have a workbench you can build wooden items and they'll snap just fine. Some of them are too small to really be useful but you can totally do it if you want to :) ..

Stamina is the only thing used when repairing stuff. So it can be handy early on for a quick cheap shelter.

You can place a workbench and maybe stonecutting bench for stone blocks if you have iron.After that you can repair damaged parts and add new ones to complete the repairs.

It gets harder when you get attached to the lox....
