We played noportal once and I didn't like it for this reason.

I had a friend that dropped in from time to time so if I was out it's very hard and time consuming to go pick him up to play for half an hour so I decide to keep a portal on me just for summoning my friend. I'd recommend do that just make sure you guys don't abuse it to return for rest, more food, dropping off items etc than it'll still feel like no portal and no map
