Permadeath is a good challenge, but I dont think I could do no portals. On the one hand, I dont like portals and wish I could do without them. When I go explore I pick up a ton of things, when I'm full I build a portal to my base, go unload everything and teleport back to keep exploring. Without this I would go crazy not being able to collect stuff.

So far I've been solving the problem by using different types of bases in addition to a 'main' processing/manufacturing base. I'm also finding that I prefer land routes than water at least until Longship and perhaps for some things even then.

A caveat, I'm using knowledge of how the event system works to avoid needing to fortify every base. It makes for some odd build orders, but allows me to decentralize much easier.

So I have repair bases, overnight bases, cart and ship served warehouse bases, farms with bees and crops, and stash points with campfire and basic workbench. I'm making a habit out of re-purposing old buildings I run across.

The farms need a special note; I need far more crops and bees than with a normal run because I can't usually visit as often. That's where the Karve comes in a bit, as well as Eithkyr run power, mostly using them for trips to farms and in the case of the Karve for exploration.

It is one heck of a logistics problem and I expect it to get worse as I progress. It seems like you need four times as much of everything than with a portal run because things are always in the wrong place.
