Its not a bad idea to have one inactive portal at the base for situations where you get stuck somewhere far from the home or you get stranded up somewhere far away as a result of messing with portal tags. This is a thing that will happen to you if you change a portal tag and enter too early - the portal will teleport to a location that was tagged earlier and disconnect. So when changing the tags, take your time and let it connect properly. I move back like 20 meters and wait for 5-10 seconds to give it enough time to connect properly.
