A fire needs at least a 2x3, 2x4, or so to keep from going out constantly. If the fire goes out when there is no rain putting it out then it is not getting enough air because the area is too enclosed.

Another option is to give the fire open area behind the walls in the A-Frame type houses. Make a chimeny as you normally would, but let the air in behind the walls.

Neither fires go out and neither cause me to choke on smoke.
