Cultivating works just like the hoe.

If you are on high ground, the cultivator will try to raise to that point. Likewise, if you are on lower ground, the cultivator will try and lower the ground. If you are cultivating near structures, just make sure you are on even or higher ground and you won't have to worry about lowering the ground and losing support.
