In general things like food, fall damage, endurance (and enemies not having to deal with any of these) seems very imbalanced. All are nice touches but I am certainly not here to play an eating simulator. And yes I would expect a short fall from a roof just tall enough for me to walk under should actually do no damage at all.

It may not be perfectly balanced but take the situation at hand.
solution: honey. 4-5 hives, and you can eat it nonstop all day without any more effort. takes nothing to prepare etc. Can now fall off a 2 story home and live, or fall in your fire or get stuck in smoke and live, or get ambushed by a group of dwarves. solves minor damage stuff at home assuming you are armored and can react.
past that there are many simple foods you can use that take little prep. just cook meat and lizard tails and eat honey and you are good up to the swamp. No major effort. Swamp you get turnip stew and start having to farm a bit, but its still not that hard to manage. I have a 20 plot turnip farm and it makes all I need. Avoid the foods that take a lot of effort unless fighting a boss you should not need.
