I have lost boats after mobs destroyed the nearby workbench. Since the workbench was gone then items were subject to normal despawn rules rather than no despawn within a workbench area. Hence why I said to bury the workbench.

Please don't be so defensive. I"m not trying to discredit your advice. Just offering my take.
