I have 6 or 7 packs of 4-8, 2 star wolves outside my city walls. There's a combination of Black Forest, Meadows and a small Mountains (no drakes, very few wolves & fenrig) biomes. I will run around picking up reagents while the wolves hunt deer, boar & greydwarves, so basically they feed themselves.
The only time my wolves wander from where they were commanded to stay, is mainly newborn wolves. Newborn wolves will move away from the pack 50-70 metres. My full-grown wolves rarely stray far from where I initially placed them, so I placed them where deer & boar spawn. I do not butcher my wolves anymore, as their mortality rate from invasion of fuling & swamp creatures sufficiently supplies meat enough for Wolf Skewers. They do surprisingly well against all other invasions, and tear through trolls so easily I do not even have to leave my HQ.
The only time I fish is when I am taming lox, which I do a lot of, or when I just want to kick back in the game. I enjoy fishing, probably because I enjoy it so much in real life. Can't wait for the game expansion that adds golf to Valheim ...
