I've always thought of the plains as a likeness of the Mediterranean coastlands, where barley and flax were cultivated in abundance. It also makes sense with the Viking history; some individuals serving the Byzantines as the Varangian guards, and some Vikings went far south to Constantinople and even further, to trade wool, furs, amber, dried fish, among other things.
