There's another trick as well. Placing a floor piece out away from you on top of a previous floor allows you to snap a second piece to the original merely by having the cursor on the second floor.
So it's like creating 2 floors just to get the first ones to snap. Of course you still need structural integrity to be able to build out far enough.
