I get it but it really makes for ugly bases when every single build has to be surrounded by dirt walls with a moat....super boring.

Was it a raid? No biome has default protection from raids with mobs from other biomes.
Regardless why you were attacked it is quite possible to build defendable bases without dirt walls. Island bases are great for defence. Ir you could gave some walls made of building parts. Another option is to just kite an attack walzing the, around your base untill the raid is over. Yet another option is to build a small fort next to the base and simply defend that during the raid.
