I feel like fishing got slightly improved system this update since you can get valuable items other than fish in this game like iron, copper, barley, onion seeds and so on which can get really handy if doing challenges or getting ores early (though the percent chance is 10% by almost all the fishes).

The big issue i have with fishing is that it doesn't offer new foods for fishing early to mid other than raw fish and even then there are better foods options since fishing takes time while option to take out a neck, boar or a deer takes less time than fishing.

Though fishing does or could become valuable in late game.

Fish Wraps are kinda worse than lox meat pie in plains biome era which is true if you have enough lox meat and thistles yet if you waste time fishing early and mid and getting a lot of fish then it becomes an alternative to it since you don't get enough health or duration yet having a lot of fish and barley flour means that it might be cheaper, less time consuming or risky as killing loxes takes forever and thistles can be hard to get at times.

Meanwhile at Mistlands, getting anglerfish and bread might be the most valuable food as not only do you get the best stamina food with same health as a cooked boar meat but catching quantities of angler fish also gives you Soft tissue (which is very handy as soft tissue is very limited compared to other valuable mistlands items) and having at least fish and bread makes it less reason to have 2 stamina foods.

I still do think fishing is very niche but far better than previously plus this small update did make it a reason to go fishing mainly for the valuable items and late game food. Its just that valheim needs fish foods for early and mid to have a reason for fishing as currently most players would just forget it and go just in a usual ways.
