My wolves have the run of the place. If they damage anything, it is not nearly as often or as much as the mobs they keep off my property.
But if you don't want to have them where they might damage something you can easily station them where you want them to be.
I am building a system of wolf lodges around the far perimeter of the property. When each one is finished, I bring a starting pack of five wolves and a bunch of meat.
Just for fun, I've decided that each pack should have it's own name, as signified by a trophy mounted on the den. Thus there is the Greydwarf Lodge, the Shaman Lodge and so on.
The names don't signify anything about their prowess as a pack. What will signify is the trophies in their trophy chest and eventually mounted on their trophy boards.
And of course, signs bearing the names of the fallen, for I am naming every wolf in the starter pack. Any anonymous offspring that die will get an honorary name.
I have lots of time on my hands. Whatever spawns on or near my compound is dealt with immediately. I don't see greydwarfs or brutes greylings or necktails or trolls. or anything.
But I hear them dying as I build a grand elevated walkway from the main house to the lighthouse, and there are no walls to spoil my view of the sea.
As to wolf meat, the honored dead provide too much of that. *covers heart, looks piously downward and belches*
