Edit: Do you have Steam’s cloud save on? You might be able to restore your game from there. Not sure how it works, though. Worth a try.

It is not required. It is completely optional. But if you care about your stuff, it is a good thing to do. I do it even for non-beta games; not doing it for a beta is ... high risk.
