I can't tell you why since I'm not a developer. But I can tell you that there are various graphic mods to improve it greatly. I never used them tho since the performance of the game even without mods is ... "eh". I imagine the mods hitting the performance even harder.

But I know you have to cut corners if you want games like this where you can build and terraform without many limites besides your own rig.
