Th cap is six. I'm pretty sure that cap is consistent for all tamable critters. If there re six of them within five squares breeding will stop. The trick is to separate the herd from the breeding pair by at least five meters. There are videos on YouTube on how to do this automatically and grow yourself a very large heard.
