You have not experienced the right seeds, I presume. There are seeds with almost gigantic landmasses. They're good for having more biomes than usual on the starter island, but they're also sometimes in the way when you want to get somewhere quick with the boat.

So, as everything, large continents have their positives and negatives.

Try the seed "Valheim". You might like it. ;)
