The reason is maybe in your setting of the Steam Cloud. Maybe you have it "On" and have "preferred files are on the Cloud". Then, if you canceled your game incorrectly, the Steam client don't das the sync correctly and therefore you have today this state. I strongly suggest to switch off the Steam cloud and do backup of the ".\worlds" and ".\characters" directories ... You can also try to rename "yourWorld.fwl.old" and "yourWorld.db.old" to the "yourWorld.fwl" and "yourWorld.db" - in files with ".old" suffix is the state before the last sesion was started ...
