This has worked for me as well, but time doesn't pass for the boars when the player is not present, so I ended up moving my veggie and tree farms there. Before we had pause, I would visit the boars prior to going afk (with my ears on).

Of course, this undermines the advantage of keeping your livestock remote. You can minimize the time you spend there, but they won't reproduce in your absence.

I was about to commit the gambler's fallacy and suggest that the best time to go should be right after an attack on your main base, but the chances of an event are x% per unit of time, so it makes no difference.

A large number of starred boars inside a stockade can do a good job of defending themselves. Some will die, but you were going to kill them anyway.

Roofing a large area is possible, but its easier to sequester a pair of breeders in Ft. Knackwurst adjacent to the big pen.

Tamed wolves and boars can mingle.

One disadvantage of having a large number of tamed animals on your premises is framerate.

During events, you want to draw attackers away from your animals, but that's easier said than done. I lost my first **boars to a skeleton surprise when I thought I had drawn off the attackers. I was having a wonderful time finding out how many I could destroy in once swing of my crystal battle ax. Then I heard squealing from the boars.

When I arrived, just in time to see the last one buy the farm, the pen was full of twinkling bones and boar meat. The boars had done a good job defending themselves, but there weren't enough of them.
