It has been this way since before you were born, calm your outrage. Just because you did not see or more likely do not remember the screaming from consumers 'back in the day' does not mean that it was absent.

Doom 2 was called 'too similar', 'too different', 'a fresh take'. Call of Duty was panned because 'Doom clones are losing sight of what they should be' and 'Doom clones are too conservative and need to change the formula'. And yes, even in the 2000s some people were clinging to 'Doom clone' as a term.

We get it, you like the game, but people wanting things to their tastes is as old as humanity.
